Insigne? Maybe, probably…. The orange Leccinums are a tough group to split up, what it is growing with is one key. In reality nobody is real sure what to to call them until some more DNA work is done. So an «orange red top growing with aspen» is as good a name as Leccinum insigne. We are not even sure if the characteristics we are using are unique to any one particular orange leccinum. More than anything we try and be consistent in what we call them.
The one issue that is out the is that we do get rare reports of people getting sick from eating them. Most often related to over consumption. It maybe that we have one Orange Leccinum that is actually different and has a toxin in it. Or maybe it is just individual intolerance coupled with eating a lot of it. Which is a good reason to try and distinguish them.
